Skimboarding

Florida is a major location for skimboarding. Skimboarding, a sport related to surfing, underwent a large popularity increase in the late 1980’s. A brief explanation of skimboarding is as follows: a person waits near shore for a wave to form, and when it forms, the person runs to the wet sand and uses a skimboard to glide into and surf the wave. Skimboard athletes have recognized that desirable spots around Florida actually are close to the number in California, where the sport started. A major skimboarding event is the Florida Skimboarding Pro-Am, held each year at Vilano Beach, outside of St. Augustine. Vilano Beach is also the Florida Crossover Skimboard Tour site. Other events are held in Cocoa Beach and Panama City Beach. The Sunshine State even is home to a contingent of professional skimboarders, such as Steve Boomhower of Venice, Florida and Brad Evers of Vilano Beach, Florida.
