Surf Music Bands
While most don’t think of Florida as a heavy surf music area, Florida is home to a small number of home-grown bands who play either the traditional surf music or modern music that appeals to surfers.

The Del Reys is a surf band that reformed in Florida in the early 2000’s to record a live CD of instrumental surf music. In the early 1960’s, the Del Reys played at sock hops and other venues under a variety of different names. This Florida guitar, bass and drums surf group, led in both incarnations by Tom Green, now features his son, Rocky, on both keyboards (an old-style Hammond B3) and guitar, Tony Martin on bass, and Steve Forst on drums. Lo Presher brings a distinctly alternative feel to Florida surf music. Based out of the Central Florida area, Lo Presher uses a variety of instrumentation (such as both acoustic and synthesized percussion equipment, guitars, bass, and samples) and vocals to evoke appreciation for nature and humans. At times, the lyrics bear the strong scent of Florida life. Three albums released in the 1990’s detail Lo Presher’s career: Dreamstorm Collection, Icon Jungle, and Indigenous Species. Their production company, Evrec Productions in Central Florida, is an official sponsor of the Surfrider Foundation. More details regarding Lo Presher, including band lyrics, can be found at http://www.lopresher.com.
The Prosthetics, from Pensacola, Florida, represent experimental, independent surf music. Their influences include diverse artists such as Dick Dale and Devo. The band is also described as a psycho-surf rock band, founded by Dr. S.A. and Dr. S.V. Savage in 1995. The Prosthetics surf sounds include machine-made phaser patterns along with guitar, drums, and bass. The Prosthetics won the Discovery Stage amateur band award at the 1997 Pensacola SpringFest, a leading music festival. Get ready for a strange experiment at http://www.theprosthetics.com.

The Livid Kittens have enjoyed quite a bit of exposure to working with national bands while being local talent of South Florida/ Ft. Lauderdale. They have played gigs with artists such as Iggy Pop, Rev. Horton Heat, and X. Their sound is an edgy blend of punk, goth, and hot-rod music, evolving with each release. In the 1990’s, the Livid Kittens released two cassettes (Fuzz-drenched and dripping, and Alone with Everybody) and one CD called Undercool. The early 2000’s brought another release, “More Flames to Fall in Love With,” and a track on the Instinct Records compilation “12 Tales.” Paige Alison Harvey has been a longtime singer with the group, catching the Fort Lauderdale weekly New Times publication’s ‘Best Female Rock Vocalist’ award.
