Wakeboarding

The water sport of wakesurfing (also known as freeboarding) had its start in Cypress Gardens, Florida, where Dick Pope initiated trials with towing surfers behind boats circa 1963. Wakesurfing evolved into wakeboarding in the 1980’s, and wakeboarding has made its mark in Florida as an extremely fast-growing water sport. In 1992, professional wakeboarding gained popularity through events hosted by Florida’s World Sports & Marketing enterprise. The Pro Wakeboard Tour today has a stop in Florida, at the Orlando Watersports Complex. This Orlando complex also hosts the WWA Wakeboard World Championship, the third event in the Vans Triple Crown of Wakeboarding (started by Florida’s World Sports & Marketing). The amateur wakeboarding event series known as the Performance Ski and Surf Gravel Tour is also held at the Orlando Watersports Complex. The wakeboard is a cross between a waterski and a kneeboard, but surfers can also choose to use a traditional surfboard for wakeboarding. A camp for wakeboard instruction is located in the premier wakeboarding area of Clermont, Florida, and several Florida schools offer different levels of instruction.
